Inspired by traditional Rwanda building and weaving techniques, this design proposal suggests contemporary ways of repurposing the fine craftsmanship. Articulated as a veil, a barrier, a threshold, the woven built form is blended with the surrounding landscape, and moreover, a transmitting element to the sacred chapel. The woven structure, along with the concrete chapel structure inside, forms an atrium, which allows for a spiritual transitional moment, and social gathering functions.
The Rain is a metaphor for this design concept, as a unified force for the community to believe in, wish for, and build upon new collective memory. The chapel is not only a spiritual space to heal and pray, but more importantly, a core that reflects the value of the surrounding communities.
